COIN-OR ACTIVITIES at INFORMS Charlotte 2011

November 13 -- 16

Open Source Cluster

A cluster on open-source software sponsored by the INFORMS Computing Society and the Optimization Society is being organized by Robin Lougee (rlougee@…). Contact Robin if you're interested in giving a talk or organizing a session on your innovative research or application using open-source software.

The COIN-OR Cup Celebration

The most coveted award in computational O.R., to be presented by the 2011 Cup Chair (who, by astounding coincidence and long tradition, is also the 2010 winner). This year's winner is OpenSolver: Open Source Optimisation for Excel using COIN-OR by Andrew Mason and Iain Dunning. OpenSolver is an "Open Source linear and integer optimizer for Microsoft Excel. OpenSolver is an Excel VBA add-in that extends Excel’s built-in Solver with a more powerful Linear Programming solver."

This year's COIN-OR Cup celebration will be held 8:00 pm -- 10:00 pm at The Fox and Hound, 330 North Tryon St., Charlotte, NC, 28202 (corner of Tryon St. and Seventh St.). The celebration is sponsored by IBM.

COIN-OR Members & Users Meeting

We will have one. Have an item for the agenda? Add it to the tentative agenda below.

Day: Monday, November 14th
Time: 12:30 - 1:30
Location: Convention Centre 211A
Organizer: Lou Hafer

Anyone interested in open-source software tools, open standards, and data and model repositories for any aspect of operations research is encouraged to attend the Members and Users Meeting of the Computational Infrastructure for OR (COIN-OR). Bring your own lunch and ideas.

Tentative Agenda

  • Annual summary
  • Current and upcoming priorities
  • Q&A and discussion
  • Announcements & election results

COIN-OR Booth

Visit the Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research booth (#305) to learn about high-quality, free, open-source tools for OR professionals and students, suitable for commercial, educational, and personal use. COIN-OR is the place to go when you need a `white box' for algorithm research and development.

Booth: #305
Organizer: Lou Hafer

Volunteers are always welcome to "staff the booth." Got a half hour to volunteer? Drop by the booth and chat with other Coin-OR community members and random members of the public.

For those of you who missed it, a photo and another photo of our retro 2010 booth decor!

COIN-OR Annual News Round Up

We're gathering news for our Annual Report summarizing "what's new" and "what's happening" with COIN-OR. With some luck and ambition, this will also make it into the Computing Society Fall newsletter and an OR/MS Today article.

Add your news to the Annual Report 2011 wiki page. Say what you want, how you want, as long as you want. We'll pull the information as late as possible and edit it to create an Annual Report for distribution at INFORMS.

COIN-OR Report to the INFORMS Computing Society

To further their mutual goals, the COIN-OR Foundation, Inc. and the INFORMS Computing Society (ICS) formed a strategic partnership in 2006. A report on the 2011 activities of COIN-OR will be given at the ICS business meeting.
